The State of Higher Education in Somalia
Privatization, rapid growth, and the need for regulation
Higher education institutions have proliferated in Somalia during the two decades of civil war. More than 50,000 students are attending some 50 universities across the country.
This exponential growth happened largely without government oversight and quality control. The absence of national and regional educational policies adds to the woes of higher education institutions. Research and publications capacity is almost nonexistent. Teaching capacity is also very low.
Universities lack adequate facilities such as science and computer labs. And they heavily rely on student fees to subsidize their operations. The federal government and regional administrations must develop educational policies that address quality issues and align national priorities with educational policies. The international community should also work with national and sub-national entities to improve quality and capacity.

Dowladda Federaalka iyo maamul-goboleedyada waxaa la gudboon inay soo saaraan siyaasado waxbarasho oo wax ka qabtada arrimaha la xiriira tayada, isla markaana is waafajiya ahamiyadaha qaranka iyo siyaasadaha waxbarashada. Beesha caalamigana ah waa inay la shaqeeyaan hey’adaha qaranka iyo kuwa gobollada, si loo hagaajiyo tayada aqoonta.
